Old Penteli’s square – Ntaveli’s Cave

From the Old Penteli’s Square you must take the road to the ravine and walk downhill for about 500 meters up to the ravine’s bridge. Turn right and start ascending on the old and worn-out paved with asphalt road at the beginning which will soon become an earth road for a total length of 2.5 km. Now you are walking on a distinct path marked with red marks. On the way you will see many abandoned quarries and small rough constructions that were shelters for the quarrymen, but you will also admire the magnificent view and the magnificence of the mountain. Soon you will reach two concrete columns that are on the right and left of the path, which were once part of the cave’s old fence. The path has now been transformed into a stone paved road, which is part of an ancient road where it is believed (without being historically verified) that was used for carrying Pentelic marble to ancient Athens.

Now the cave is in front of us and by hiking a little bit more we arrive at the cave’s entrance at an altitude of 720 meters. The picture of Saint Spyridon’s chapel (late 10th – early 11th century), which is squeezed on the rocks of the entrance, is very impressive. The cave, except of bandit Ntaveli’s den, in antiquity it was a sanctuary for the god Pan, while during the Byzantine period it was a resting place for monks. Today, on the vertical rocks, at the entrance of the cave, there are the signs of the ancient marble extraction works, as well as the signs from the routes of modern climbers.

The road back is done by following the same route at the opposite way.   For the less experienced, there is the possibility to go by car to the cave and to hike downhill to Palaia Penteli’s square. The view, even from the car, as you are ascending, initially to Kifissia and then to the Monastery of Agios Panteleimon, is impressive. After the crossroad for the Monastery and in, about 850 meters away, you will find a small clearing with a damaged road sign, that shows the way to Daveli’s cave. Here you can park your car and hike along the earth road. After about 1 km you will reach the cave’s entrance. To get back to Old Penteli, you have only to follow the stone paved road, opposite the entrance of the cave and the reverse downhill route from the ascending one, described in the previous paragraph
