The road is smooth, without difficulties, it leads us closer to our destination. Walking slowly, in about an hour, we see the small clearing that is our goal. A little higher than street level with the small wooden cabin on the edge, the gazebo with the grill in the middle, the small slide and the wooden benches, is like a picture from a magazine.
With great caution we pass over the rocks (there is a signal on the rock from where we have to start) going to the opposite bank. The path is clear and shows us its intensions from the very beginning, as it is quite steep. Of course in the one and a half hour that we need to get to “Krevatia”, there are mild spots and passes but in general we gain altitude very fast. We realize this when, after about an hour, we see the banks of the stream hanging 500 meters below our feet.
The route from the refuge to the summit is relatively easy. The mountain, on this side is a stone and dry land, so the hiker has a great open view in the horizon. Besides that, the uphill is not too bad. So the climber can follow different routes for hiking, since the orientation is very easy.
Remember that we only get essential equipment with us. We load the backpack in layers, from bottom to top. We fill all the gaps where they exist and make sure that a solid and symmetrical load is formed. When we wear the backpack, we adjust it in such a way that it is an extension of our body.
Finally, to complete the purchase of your backpack, check the above and test it on the store. Fill it with something (for example your jacket), wear it and take several steps with it, to “feel” it. Many times you will find that what you visually like, does not suit you physically.
Since our first visit to the mountain seven years ago, we have praised the work of the Forestry Dept of Goumenissa and will do so again because of the very good marking and maintenance of the trail and the very good maintenance and aesthetics of the wooden structures (cabins, benches etc).
When temperatures drop down, ice and snow bring new challenges to the hikes. So here are some important rules that will help you stay safe and enjoy your routes in the nature, without having unexpected problems.
